I do have worries that the EU institutions and politicians see the euro as a european totem, and will paper over cracks in the short run and sacrifice economic logic.

i'm not an economist, but http://ftalphaville.ft.com/blog/2010/07/23/295781/the-stress-test-guide/
item 5 explains the stresses.

They talk about growth 3% lower than expected for two years; for spain this translates into -3.4% and -2.2%.
they also talk about "hits to the loan book", i suppose that means defaults.

I read also everywhere that spain was more stringent in its tests than other countries (germany)

So i think default on spanish mortgages is taken into account.

but indeed, even if the banks remain solvent that does not solve spain's competitiveness problem

In a short op-ed a while back the chicago economist John Cochrane argued that the Commission and the ECB should have let greece crash and burn, in the longer term interest of the euro.

The point being greece was too small to matter economically, that contagion fears were overdone, and that countries with structural problems have to bite the bullet and offering them more soft budget support doesn't help in the long run.

Not saying I agree on all points with Cochrane, but I do have worries that the EU institutions and politicians see the euro as a european totem, and will paper over cracks in the short run and sacrifice economic logic for short term stability.

Is there an endgame here ?

my guess is we'll bumble along ineffectively for five years, then have a crisis of some sort. maybe rather sooner. But then I'm a pessimist by nature.

If you are are dealing with stress then first learn not to take everything personally. Your behavior is the only thing that you can control.
