Kharkiv is russophone, but it also has a more post-industrial bent than much of the South-East. From what I hear, Yushchenko's support in the Russian-speaking cities is largely limited to white-collar liberals.

According to BBC, Kharkiv, the second city and in the east, is seeing opposition protests. This is more promising news...

Posted some comments on my own blog. This won't be resolved by the people. Putin wouldn't have welcomed Yakunovich if he didn't think he could wield huge influence. Not sure he will win in the end, because world opinion will be in favour of the orangemen (how strange to say that!)

I'm still trying to keep up with this over at my place, but need food, and have to take a break to cook. The Periscope have a guy on the scene providing regular updates in their comments section, if this hasn't been pointed out here yet

Actually, I'm not sure that describing it as an east/west division is that accurate. The map here for instance (scroll down to preliminary results) makes it look more like a North and West vs South and East division, but Kiev's firmly in the Yuschenko section of the country. A map of Ukraine with major towns is here.

Kiev isn't. He seems to've got massive support there, which should be crucial.

The miners from Donetsk threatening to go to Kiev isn`t a big surprise. Donetsk is where Yanukovich is from (and received a highly suspect 95% of the vote). All the cities in Ukraine that are having rallies in support of Yushenko are in the Ukrainian nationalist West.

Yeah, I've just read Donetsk was pro Yanukovich - also not good news. I think it now goes to the realpolitik stage...

Unfortunately, I see only half of the major cities mentioned in the report - Odessa and all the major cities to the southeast of Kijev are missing. Also, the threat of the miners - this worked for Iliescu in Romania when there were major demonstrations in Buchurest in the early nineties.

I suspect the fact that so many of the protests are taking place in THE major cities of the Ukraine will see this resolved in Yushchenko's favour. If the majority of urban centres are paralysed by what happens, something will have to happen. I am pleased that so far the protests have been functioning on the symbols of democracy.
