France has been regressing when it comes to sexuality issues ever since the _belle ?poque_, it seems sometimes. Although, to give them their due, it’s normally a consequence of the actions of campaigning former prostitutes rather than prudery.

Singapore banning chewing gum because of the cost it created when cleaning the streets always seemed to be the coolest thing to me. The most economic of economic judgements; who benefits from chewing gum? The makers, no-one else. How much pleasure do chewing-gum consumers derive from the stuff? Very little, certainly not enough to outweigh the additional cost when cleaning. Pity they bowed to Wrigley’s via the US government in the end.

Anyone have any French-language links on the story? Le{monde,figaro}.fr charge for their archives, and liberation.com says “Aucun document trouv? pour ‘margaret and macdonald’”.

Damn if that doesn’t read like a retread of the Sydney Biddle Barrows case…the Mayflower Madam.

A very similar story; a blue-blood runs a high-end Escort Agency before being busted for being successful. Except set in New York, about twenty years ago.

So is France regressing when it comes to sexuality issues ?
