[...] On the fiction side I recently read A Passage to India by E.M. Forster which I loved and which made me want to go back to India again. I was horrified and saddened by the recent attacks in Mumbai having spent three days there in January, relaxing from a hectic Journey through Northern India, but I would not hesitate to go back as early as a few weeks from now. One of my favorite blog posts about the events was this heartfelt post about how terror will never succeed and how our way of life will continue (found via A Fistful of Euros). [...]

I am concerned that everyone is saying this was an unknown group and a surprise attack. I found an article from September that shows that this was planned and the government did not stop it.

Puzzeled? Because they used commando troops instead of bombs? I am gratefull for that. They had a ship. If they had managed to organize enough fertilizer and diesel to fill that, it would have been very bad.

The attacks have me horrified and puzzled, not the reactions. Bad phrasing on my part, but I thought it was obvious.

The blog entries you quote deal with the issues on the ground at an emotional point. How is it horrifying and puzzling :
- The joy of seeing friends and the relief that they have not been caught up in events;
- the realisation that life goes on, and that the terrorists only win if you allow yourself to be terrorised;
- the realisation that places you've frequented daily have just recently been used by terrorists, and that you now see it through different eyes;
- that the terrorists, in portraying themselves as members of a certain group, seek to divide that group's community from society at large.

Would you characterise the "bulldog spirit" during the Blitz as puzzling? Or the commuters who returned to work the day after the Madrid & London bombings?
