There were often problems with the rhythm section. Non-rock, but I really liked Laurent Voulzy's "Cach? Derriere". Much of the good French music lately has been hip hop anyway - IAM, NTM and a few others. And of course, France has always had a few very good singers, Brel, Brassens, Barbara, and many others.
