Joe Van Holsbeeck

I’m not sure how much this story has been covered elsewhere, but the big story in Belgium for the last couple weeks has been the murder of Joe Van Holsbeeck, a 17 year old who was killed for an MP3 player in the main hall of Brussels Central train station during rush hour.

I left for vacation in Tunisia two days after the murder and returned just last Saturday, so I missed much of the development of the story. On Sunday, some 80,000 people marched, nominally in solidarity with the family but a little more realistically in response to fears about their security. I want to point out that much of Belgian society has behaved admirably. The victim’s family specifically did not want this to turn into a partisan cause. Almost all sectors of society expressed their horror at this crime without resorting to racialism. I’m actually kind of proud of my land of residence, which is not something that happens very often.

I, however, will not be abiding by the family’s wishes. I have a partisan statement make about this killing.

I want to talk about the people who haven’t behaved so well. You see, CCTV footage of the suspects (see here, for instance) led virtually everyone to assume that the perpetrators were of North African (Arab, Muslim) decent. For this reason, the Union of Brussels Mosque Associations issued a call for the perpetrators to turn themselves in. The Belgian Muslim executive council however, took some flak for refusing to join them, saying “So long as the perpetrators have not been identified, we see little use in making a statement. […] Just because the perpetrators have an Arab appearance does not mean that they are Muslims. Our role is to support the mourning family. [The council] will be sending a letter of condolences to Joe’s parents in the coming days.”

The press and bloggers were not very reticent to see an ethnic and partisan meaning to this. State owned VRT implied that since “the killers are believed to be of North African descent. Their identity is probably known among the Brussels ethnic minorities.” Brussels Journal blogger and Vlaams Belang water-bearer Paul Belien complains the the BBC neglected to mention the ethnicity of the killers. His trackbacks are even worse. Not to mention how the more openly racist elements of the American blog world (start here and follow the links), or many other bloggers (a search at Technorati will find them). I haven’t yet checked through all the press, but I’ll give odds that the tone of the “quality” Flemish press has not exactly been impartial either.

Now, here’s the kicker. The cops arrested one of the suspects today. Turns out he’s Polish. That means white, probably Catholic. Apparently, so is the other suspect.

So, to the racist assholes of the Vlaams Belang, to every Belgian reporter and editorialist who through casual racism allowed their coverage to assume that the perpetrators were Muslims, to Brussels Journal, Michelle Malkin, the LGF crowd, to the many who blamed this killing on Islam or race, and to everyone in Belgium who thinks Islam is more incompatible with European values than Catholicism, I would like to offer up a big fuck you! If you wonder why your immigrants are socially excluded, you might start by looking at the society they’re excluded from.

  1. Hy Scott,
I’m a 30-year old medical doctor from Italy of both italian and flemish descent.
I’m not an expert of belgian politics, but I would like to understand why you write “the racist assholes of the Vlaams Belang”. This party gains up to 26% of flemish vote…… does that mean that 26% of flemish people are “racist assholes”?

  2. “Martens” seems to be a flemish name.
That means that you hate your own people 🙁

  3. “Now, here’s the kicker. The cops arrested one of the suspects today. Turns out he’s Polish. That means white, probably Catholic. Apparently, so is the other suspect.”

    Nice catch, Scott.

“does that mean that 26% of flemish people are “racist assholes”?

No, not necessarily. Xenophobic, probably. But it is quite complicated, you need to throw separatism (an independent Flanders) and the whole history of the Flemish Movement into the mix as well.

From my experience, Flemish people like their peace and quiet. Anything that upsets their daily life and traditions is likely to get a first hostile glance. Eventually they’ll come round and are quite capable of accepting people who are in any way foreign to them.

The situation in Flanders right now, and maybe the general feeling among VB adherents, is that it has all become too much. Too much to cope with at the same time.

VB proclaims to offer people security and safety (their main election points) and that is exactly what many people in Flanders seem to need right now. They need to feel safe and secure in their own homeland.

VB is not only about racism, it is also about family values and ties in with the current Republican amalgam in the US.

To call ALL VB voters racist has actually helped them to remain loyal to VB and strengthen their
convictions. Flemish people cherish the underdog status and will dig in their heels when provoked. It is really important to understand this.

Take away their insecurity and you’ll find that most Flemish people can be really forthcoming and understanding.

I know this comment of mine will provoke much criticism since it, also, is too generalistic. But, believe me, to call all VB voters racist, and nothing more than that, is counterproductive.

And this differs from Republican a-holes or Islamic a-holes how exactly?
The rapid changes of modern life are not unique to Belgium, and reacting to them through hatred of strangers is neither an acceptable nor a useful strategy, whether you are European, American or Arab.

  5. “The rapid changes of modern life are not unique to Belgium, and reacting to them through hatred of strangers is neither an acceptable nor a useful strategy, whether you are European, American or Arab.”

I never said it was acceptable. Understanding and accepting are two completely different concepts.

  6. They showed the images of the security camera’s on the tv in Belgium, in the hopes that someone might recognize the perpetrators.

  7. Michelle Malkin now has an update which states, without comment, that the suspects are Polish. I can’t seem to get into LGF so I don’t know what its position is.
I would imagine that Ms. Malkin will soon be blogging nonstop about the Duke lacrosse rape and will forget about this Belgian “mistake.”

  8. I suspect she will be too busy moaning about the pacifists whose home addresses she publicised publishing hers to write about anything else.

  9. yes it should be pointed out (for non belgian readers) that most of the VB’s 25% voters are most likely attracted by the “vlanderen as a nation” part of there agenda than the “away with foreigners” part.

strip the independance part of there agenda and u’ll probbly get a VB in the north as important as there political counter part in the french speaking part (ie under the 3% treshold).

again for people not familliar with the belgian economic map, north to south financial transfer are said to be in excess of €6 bn a year

  10. I was kicking myself when I realized Belien was behind Brussels Journal. If we’d noted it during their 15 seconds of fame, we’d get some attention. It’s noteworthy if unsurprising that the UIS GOP bloggers embraces a Vlaams Belang booster.

  11. “It’s noteworthy if unsurprising that the UIS GOP bloggers embraces a Vlaams Belang booster.”

Yep. David, notice the “pajama medias logo” on this Belgian blog:

    http://lvb.net/

There is some transatlantic networking going on.

  12. Now Alessandro, you don’t even know the colour of my skin and you’re imputing ethnicity to me. My mother’s maiden name is Brandt, does that make me German? My great-great-grandmother was a foundling abandonned by gypsies, does that make me Rom? My family tree includes Poles, Ukrainians and most likely a few Jews from the shtetl – old Russia was not exactly a land of ethnic purity – and there’s at least a 50-50 chance I’m descended from Genghis Khan. But no documented family member of mine has been born in Belgium since at least 1550, unless you count my aunt, who was born in the Belgian Congo.

    In short, I’m Canadian.

As for “hating”, do you think 26% is a large percentage of racist assholes? I suspect that is a low estimate, but if only 26% of Flemings were utter bigots, Flanders would be a remarkably non-racist society by global and historical standards.

Guy, I’ll accept that some of the VB’s voters are just dumb and non-reflective. But look, calling segregationists in the US racists was part of what made it easy for them to circle the wagons in the 50s and 60s against federal civil rights laws. And yet, racists is exactly what the segregationists undoubtedly were, and I’m hard pressed to see how calling it something else was likely to help the civil rights movement.

The Flemish like their peace and quiet. So does everybody. But no one ever gets it except in retrospect. According to Belgians, Belgium has been in a state of continuous crisis since at least the end of the Second World War. You know I pay a 3% “emergency income tax” that’s been on the books since the early 60s?

They may have their illusions, every society does. But that doesn’t mean I have put up with it.

  13. “They may have their illusions, every society does. But that doesn’t mean I have put up with it.”

I am not saying that and I do sympathize with this particular “fuck you” in your post. But it is, I repeat, very important to try and understand the Flemish soul. If only for strategic reasons. The call-them-all-dumb-and-racist tactic has already backfired a couple of times in the election booth. It has been said so many times it has become a cliché that just slides off the duck’s back.

“You know I pay a 3% “emergency income tax” that’s been on the books since the early 60s?”

I have paid it for 14 years 🙂 And I have dealt firsthand with dumb VB adherents. The best strategy is to focus on the remaining 74% who do not, for the time being, vote VB. They already know the discourse of VB-is-racist. And even if that accusation is 100% true, we will need better arguments for the next elections.

  14. Guy, fair enough. Although I should note for the record that I am not currently running for office in Belgium nor eligible to vote. Furthermore, I derive some pleasure from disproving common racist preconceptions about immigrants by complaining about Belgium more than most more visible immigrants dare to, and by pointing out to people that the average Moroccan shop keeper in Antwerp is better integrated into Belgian society than I am. (I usually prove this by speaking atrocious Dutch.)

Yes, the other 74% – or at least a substantial part of that 74% – are part of what keeps me here in Belgium. The other parts, are, admittedly, money and that I’m too lazy to want to move. But I said I was proud of Belgians for the lack of racism the vast majority of them showed in this affair. And I really am.

  15. I hear you, Scott. Believe me, I know how frustrating blind discrimination can be. There is so much I could tell, but this is not the place neither the time for it.

One slightly related anecdote. I once crossed the Belgium/Netherlands border on my bike. Going into The Netherlands a Dutch guy called me “stupid Belgian”. On my way back to Belgium, once again crossing the border, I was called “stupid cheesehead” by a Belgian. This is a true story and very telling 🙂

Of course, I could hide my immigrant status being white and all. For my Moroccan brother in law the situation is quite different. No, seriously, I am hearing you.

  16. Nobody ever said the *only* crimes in commeitted are by islamic youth.
On the other hand, the statistics speak for themselves. Europe is in the middle not of a crime wave, but a veritable crime tsunami, committed by islamic youth.

And why should it not? Islam considers itself as permanently at war with non-islam, and in the mosques, which are sprouting all over Europe like mushrooms, they are reminded of that.

In that, Europe is not different from anywhere else in the word, where islam meets non-islam. What is astounding is the European insistence that its experience will be different. Different from the whole world and from 1400 years track record. Now, you have to admire that optimism.

  17. >If you wonder why your immigrants are socially excluded, you might start by looking at the society they’re excluded from.

We dont need immigrants. Why are they here? Espescially the muslims?

For your information, I have nothing to do with the Vlaams Belang, I am a member of the VLD, the Flemish Liberal Party.

@Scott Martens: “Turns out he’s Polish. That means white, probably Catholic. Apparently, so is the other suspect.”

For your information, Flemish newspaper Het Nieuwsblad wrote today that they are Polish gipsies. That seems relevant to me in so far that it helps to explain the initial confusion about the ethnicity of the killers. Even witnesses said they thought they were “North Africans” because of their skin color. When it became known that they were Polish, it seemed as if those initial witness reports had been unreliable. Now we know the explanation.

  19. “Flemish newspaper Het Nieuwsblad wrote today that they are Polish gipsies.”

Oh that’ll be all right then. Not “proper” Catholic Poles. Who cares about their “race”, “ethnicity”, “nationality”, or country of citizenship. We should care about where physically they are to be found, but that is about it. Other than that, they are criminals, pure and simple.

  20. “For your information, I have nothing to do with the Vlaams Belang, I am a member of the VLD, the Flemish Liberal Party.”

True enough, but you aligned yourself with Pajamas Media and therefore, albeit indirectly, with the American right wing. Nothing wrong with that, but it is a form a transatlantic networking. BTW, congrats on your great work for the Brussels Journal. Say hi to Alexandra Colen for me.

Why I like Alexandra Colen, VB member and co-author of Brussels Journal:

“young men become gay because older men like a young boy, The young women are being taken away from the young men, with as result there won’t be attractive woman anymore for the boys. With as result boys have the neccesity to get with the same sex”.

    Sorry for the off-topic.

  21. Correction, the A. Colen quote should read:

“young men become gay because older men like a young woman. The young women are being taken away from the young men, with as result there won’t be attractive woman anymore for the boys. With as result boys have the neccesity to get with the same sex”.

  22. To suspect that the criminals in this case were Morrocan is simply common sense. North Africans commit a far greater number of crimes in Belgium than native Whites, or Turks for that matter, and considering the video evidence, it was simply a case of 1+1=2(or 3! ).

But Scott, in usual effete, temper-tantrum form, shits his pants because this case may have been a mistake. Ah well. Society isn’t perfect, but I’d rather rely on empirical evidence than blathering emotion.

  23. Scott “Fuck You” Martens is but the Euro equivalent of Markos “Screw Them” Zuniga, at Daily Kos.

As such, his views are easily dismissable, since he refuses to see beyond his ideology.

  24. Scot….the main suspect in the murder of Van Holsbeek is Gypsie, not ethnically Polish or White, but of course that wont change your brainwashed multiCULTural thinking will it?

  25. Wow, three brainless trolls in under two hours! Same, or different? Nearly all crime in Belgium is, of course, committed by the roughly 97% of the population that isn’t of North African or Turkish origin. But it seems that blurry video + white victim = the beurs did it. No racism there, no siree bob. Just an honest mistake. But it turns out that they’re gypsies, or part gypsies, and as the last comment demonstrates well enough, anyone capable of blaming crimes on whole ethnic communities is surely capable of adding another ethnic group to their repertoire of scapegoats.

Although, to be sure, gypsies aren’t a new scapegoat, they’re an oldie that hasn’t been in the news in a while. My family is part gypsy. My father looked about as dark as the kids in that surveillance camera video. That means that shifting the blame from North Africans to western Europe’s more traditional scapegoats does not impress me.

I’m not sure what sort of confusion leads to confusing multi-culturalism, the acknowledgement that the people in other tribes are people too, with the belief that each person deserves to be judged for themselves. The latter used to be considered a basic human right, one of the things the West defended against the bigotry of less enlightened men. But I guess not.

  26. Dear sir,

You are jumping to conclusions. We of the Flemish Interest are not just against immigrants of North-African descent, we are also against Poles, especially if they’re Roma at that. Why? Well that has been pointed out by now, hasn’t it?

The only thing I have to add is that I got a good laugh out of your liberal rant and I’m looking forward to federal elections when you will undoubtedly make a tirade over how blindly xenophobic we really are. Untill the next Black Sunday!

    Oh, and fuck you too!

  27. An update via Belgian Newspaper Gazet van Antwerpen:

    http://www.gva.be/nieuws/Binnenland/default.asp?art={6A114C11-D74E-40B2-A521-44E77E4AE12B}

The elder brother of murderer Adam G. has been apprehended. It seems Adam G. has appeared before a Belgian juvenile court twice already and spent some time in a Belgian juvenile institution. The guy commuted between Poland and Brussels where he committed thefts. The loot he sold in Poland.

So, according to GvA this guy was known to Belgian justice and he was a known recidivist.

  28. I’m half French and half Swede. I look much more mediteranean than aryan (probably because my grand-parents were Italian; and for the record my other grand-mother was Norwegian).
In Stockholm, it has happened more than once on social occasions that there is a very noticable shift towards a positive attitude when I tell people this.

An unspoken “Ah, so you’re not a real wog, like a thieving yugo or a lazy tacohead” (the Swedish word for ‘wog’ is ‘svartskalle’, litterally ‘blackhead’).

Xenophobia/racism is Sweden is not as outspoken as in other European countries, but as present as in other countries; you call it a spade, j’appelle ca une pelle.

Sometimes I wish I’d pretend I am an Arab or a Turk in such situations. I’ve done it once or twice, but it’s not a hell of an icebreaker to reveal someone’s racism in flagrant délit; even more so with people who aren’t of the “I’m not a racist, but…” type, but genuinely believe themselves to be open-minded (as for the luckily rare “nationalists”, as they like to call themselves, half a frog-eating bastard is subhuman enough that it doesn’t matter).

If there is an occasion for speaking for individualism this it. So what if they were or weren’t Arabs or Belgians or Gypsies or Polacks? That’s the whole point. Your actions are yours (why o why do I have to write a truism like that?), not that of whatever group or category or set you happen to share sorting parameters with.

Furthermore, it cuts both ways. Just as whatever your co-group members doesn’t make you guilty, it’s no excuse for doing like them. It may be harder not to commit crime if your group is statiscally inclined to do so, or get a job, or be treated courteously, but life’s not fair. And people for whom life is more fair should also acknowledge that, that they didn’t draw the short stick in the ethnic lottery. Equal rights and responsibilities and all that.

Is that so hard to get? Another rhetorical question of course.

Scott “Fuck You” Martens is but the Euro equivalent of Markos “Screw Them” Zuniga, at Daily Kos

I am afraid it could be. AFOE has been a place of civilised debate till now, but this thread seem to have attracted a swarm of filthy, retarded, euro-little green lizards.

To them, I say: “You fucking cocksucking cunts”

  29. This is just sooo rich:

We of the Flemish Interest are not just against immigrants of North-African descent, we are also against Poles, especially if they’re Roma at that

…how blindly xenophobic we really are…

    No further comment needed.

I suppose garlic-stinking eaters of sour herring are also unwelcome to immigrate to Belgium, or Flanders, or Großbatavia, or whatever you want to call what where you’re living.

  30. Great post!

Being half Moroccan, half Swede I would concur in French Swede’s comments.

Furthermore, all those quick on jumping into conclusions on the supposed ethnicity of Joe’s murderers, and the link between individual ethnicity and group responsability, have failed to explain why not all Frenchmen should be expelled from Belgium on account of Michel Fourniret’s killing spree or what to do with all these Germans – after all, didn’t their forefathers kill slightly more than one teenager some decades ago?

But I suppose that coherence would spoil their fun in spitting venom on ethnic groups of whom they disapprove…

  31. “Nearly all crime in Belgium is, of course, committed by the roughly 97% of the population”

All crime isn’t the issue here. There are, what, 500,000 North Africans in Belgium? How many rapes and murders in Belgium are committed by whites? Far lower than their relative population I’ll bet.

  32. I think you are a little hard on Ms. Malkin… she is not against immigrants, she’s against self censorship, cant, and taboos that get in the way of dialoge. I have to admit to a vauguely racist dream/fantasy I once had about Ms. Malkin; I was shipwrecked in the South Seas and she came down to the beach to greet me in a grass skirt and a big smile. If that makes me a beast I’ll accept your condemnation.

  33. With the notable exceptions of the “Vlaams Belang”- and the Francophone “Front National”- politicians (and VLD-Senator Dedecker), Belgian reaction to the brutal murder of Joe Van Holsbeeck and the (presumed) ethnic identity of its perpetrators, has been remarkably calm and controlled. That is what struck me most and makes me happy to live in this country, and no more in the neighbouring country, where a similar incident (a Turkish boy killed a teacher, The Hague, 2005) provoked hysteric reactions of a xenophobic kind.

  34. The Polish murderer of Joe Van Holsbeeck might well be a Polish gypsy… Gypsies are not catholic!

Also, it’s known that he grew up in the part of Brussels where mainly north Africans live, so he took their behaviour which is well known as low and aggressive. This behaviour is demonstrated very often everywhere, every day. My daughter was aggressed by a Moroccan with a knife in the metro, asking her money. (Just to mention but one of the countless cases around.)

On the other hand, being a catholic doesn’t mean being good! The jails in the catholic countries are full with white catholic criminals! The same goes about all religions (see what catholic and protestant Christians do in Northern Ireland), especially the most intolerant ones, like e.g. the Islam.

Incompatible are not only religions, but cultures too. And yes, the Islam is incompatible with the European culture. Its values are radically different from the European ones. (e.g. how it treats the woman, or the fact Islam calls the western world’s culture “Satan’s”). It claims their religion is peaceful ! It is so peaceful, that they always cope by killing, they kill even each other! One must look back in history until today and see that Islam didn’t change at all. The muslims have no notion of the word ‘tolerance’.

In the Coran you can read: “To kill one person, is like killing all the humanity, to save one person, is like saving all the humanity”. Few pages further, it reads: “If you (muslims) find the unbelievers as obstacle on your way, you must swim in their blood” ! It’s what they do.

So, the fact that the killer is of Polish roots, doesn’t cancel the fact that the north Africans are not what they show to be.

And… the Belgians generally have a soft mushy mentality, which explains why they reacted so peacefully and neutrally (with the exception of course, of the extreme right and conservative circles.

  36. Everybody in the Central Europe knows that Gipsies are a problem group of population. This is not racism but pure statistics: crime, unemployment, drugs, youth pregnancies, you name it.

That said, over the last 50 years the Roma minority has been cherished by welfare state. They were given, e.g., homes for free, to the envy of the rest of the population. The outcome was obvious: total and complete loss of work ethics.

Welfare and affirmative actions lead nowhere. NOWHERE!!!

  37. Doesn’t really matter who the murderers were. In fact the 17-year old who is deemed to be the actual killer is a Polish Roma, and according to Polish police has been caught hiding in a residence of a rich Roma man. That also explains why the Belgian police was looking for North Africans. The second suspect, caught in Brussels, is 16 years old, Polish and white (Catholic?). So difficult to put the blame on skin colour.

Question is, whether this should imply rasicm (nope!) or rather make us think what to do to help the Roma people. Fact is, that despite living in Poland and other European countries for centuries, they are much poorer, and almost non of them reaches university education. You can blame it on the culture, but discrimination is also a fact. I recall the stories of Edyta Górniak, a popular Polish singer with Roma roots (visible). One teacher in primary school would threaten students to seat them with Górniak, “the dirty girl”, as a punishment…

And another story – the EU ambassador to Slovakia, an Englishman I believe, was called off a couple years ago (2000?), after he said in a press interview, that Roma children should be forced to go to boarding schools to separate them from their traditions…

  38. Since when are the Roma’s not Catholic? They are not like the Polish were ever blue Monday you find one who isn’t Catholic.

  39. I don’t know much about this specific story, but here in the states, people have been killed for their IPods, sneakers, etc. It never really becomes an issue of race.

  40. off tangent (but is it, really?): only whites produce Serial Killers, the kind who Plans Deliberately the suffering of another human being for their own perverse pleasure. you won’t find premeditated crimes among blacks, asians, or whatever else. only Whites have the cold bloodedness to ruthlessly colonise other peoples and raise themselves as the Standard because of their skin colour.

in the end, everybody sh*ts the same colour and from what i’ve read, there is higher incidence of colon cancer among caucasians because they don’t crap every day, it seems. so much sh*t literally locked within!

so stop bashing the romas, the gypsies, the moroccans. sure, these groups are problems, but don’t forget the systematic rape of other countries and the institutional violence against the histories of the rest of the world in order to raise the standard of first world life.

dem, your problems are Nothing compared to what others have to go through!

scott, thank you for this post. it reveals how self-absorbed people in this part of the world truly are… and for the record, i agree with you on many points in this post. (VB wants immigrants to integrate without understanding the special cultural values that immigrant populations can bring to their beloved flanders… why can’t these VB rightists learn to embrace the new as well?)
