Sarkozy wasn't interested in filling it?

Maybe he fears that people would vote socialist if the PM's chair isn't filled with somebody competent for a whole year. Perhaps he wants somebody of his own people in that office.

It isn't going to happen. Chirac isn't going to get rid of Villepin unless he falls down and crashes his skull or unless another big shoe drops in the clearstream matters. The situation for Chirac is clear, but without solution. Sarkozy has won the succession feud, and in a way, he no longer needs Chirac. He isn't going to accept to be Prime Minister unless Chirac accepts that he will have control of everything, which Chirac isn't yet ready to accept.

Ah, Alexandre got there before me. Must remember to reload the page before posting.

From today's paper, on the subject of whether or not Sarkozy wants the PM job, would François Fillon be doing his best to ensure there's a vacancy if Sarkozy wasn't interested in filling it? Other explanations - destruction of Villepin to prevent his possible reemergence after 2007, or out of pure personal animus, or out of a desire to further discredit la chiraquie - are plausible but seem less persuasive. Sarkozy does not seem like a man to take his eye away from his main goal - the presidency in 2007 - to which Villepin is no longer the main threat. If I'm missing something please let me know. As we're seeing in Britain right now, the longer these intra-party feuds go on, and the bitterer they get, the more they start to affect everything else, often in weird and hard-to-spot ways.

No formal term limit.
In fact, polls are still conducted on Chirac's chances in 2007, although that may be someone's idea of comedy (the last I heard, a few months back Journal du Dimanche was reporting the numbers wanting him to stand again as low single figures).

It is renewable as long as you (and voters) want it, and it always have been. Technically, Chirac can represent himself in 2007 for a third term; but he is old and discredited, so it will probably not happen.

Yes there was. Two terms of 7 years. The term is now 5 years. Is there a limit?

Good post Emmanuel ...

The big question, for the future, seems to be whether it will be Sarkozy or Villepin who is going to be UMP's presidential candidate.

The Socialists' will be Mme Royal, right ? ;)

Emmanuel, have I just taken a crazy pill, or did Chirac make the presidency 5 years and renewable when he changed the rules? Or is it just two 5 year terms and out?
