I thought football was a game where some guys kicked a ball around a field, and at the end of the game, the British fans started a riot.

To the best of my knowledge the Dutch have never won a shootout

Thankfully I didn't turn that into a prediction for tonight's game.

One thing which complicates this argument is the fact that major clubs are often reluctant to see their best players go off and play for their national teams. I suspect that that pressure from big clubs might have the effect of undermining the motivation of star players, especially those representing countries whose leagues contain the major club sides.

Actually, I think that rule should end 'and the Dutch will lose on penalties' - after all, we did beat Spain on penalties in 1996, though that was probably more a case of which of two perennial chokers wanted to lose the least. To the best of my knowledge the Dutch have never won a shootout - some have suggested that this is a remnant of the Cruyff era and the ethos that if you can't win playing good football, there's no point in winning at all.
