Europe and the world

Rotten Potato

by Doug Merrill

As if the time in power for Poland’s Law and Justice (PiS) party had not provided enough comedy, a backbencher has been quoted saying something so far out of the potato patch that even the party’s leadership has condemned it. Not only did Artur Gorski claim that Al Qaeda was rubbing its hands with glee at Obama’s election, he added that “The black messiah of the new left has crushed the Republican candidate John McCain, and America will soon pay a high price for this quirk of democracy.” Not content with those sage remarks, he said “Obama is an approaching catastrophe. This marks the end of white man’s civilisation.”

According to Reuters, “Foreign Ministry spokesman Jacek Paszkowski said normally he would not comment on remarks of MPs, but added: ‘In this case we feel obliged to express our disapproval of MP Gorski’s address.’”

Don’t laugh - in 2007, Australia’s Prime Minister of the time said something similar about Al Qaeda welcoming an Obama victory http://edition.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/02/12/obama.comment/index.html

He’s out of office now, and no word of his thoughts on the latest developments!

Awesome clips at T-NC’s comment. “Does the fool not realize he can catch a nuke for that?”

If my Polish were better — and infinite time available — the wacko Polish right would be a neverending source of amusement. Perpetual wingnuttiness machine. Gorski’s apparently elected from a constituency in Warsaw, which I do find a little weird. But hey, it’s his 15 minutes.

What’s especially funny is that he apparently tried to pass a law amending the constitution to appoint Jesus Christ as King of Poland.

The people who said there was No King but King Jesus in the English revolution wanted an early form of communism.

    Wait, wait…

Didn’t Sen. Maurizo Gasparri (People of Freedom-Italy) say something much like this?

Telegraph: Italy’s reaction was soured by a member of the rightwing National Alliance, Maurizio Gasparri, who said al-Qaeda might welcome Mr Obama as president. “With Obama in the White House, perhaps al Qaeda is happier,” said Mr Gasparri, who is the Senate leader of Berlusconi’s People of Freedom Party.
