Hmm. Are there any polls on how Obama plays in Europe?

As it turns out, yes.

Germany
Obama: 67 McCain: 6

France
Obama: 65 McCain: 8

Britain
Obama: 49 McCain: 14

Italy
Obama: 70 McCain: 15

And there's even

Russia
Obama: 31 McCain: 24

Granted, it's the Telegraph. But still. My sixtysomething conservative Catholic Bavarian father-in-law likes Obama.

Also, one other great quote from that post:

"And speaking of fainting couches and clutched necklaces, just imagine the speed with which Applebaum would be flat on her back, hyperventilating smelling salts and waving her palm at her Adam’s apple, if someone said that a Jewish president shouldn’t be elected because the Arabs are antisemitic."

What a crappy column. Applebaum should start blogging.

First of all, why should Americans care what other people think of THEIR president? If some Americans are worried some foreigners might find Obama, if he is elected, offensive then what on earth were they thinking when they elected Bush? Twice! Bush must have been the most offensive American president (to foreigners) in recent history.

"Obama's face, by itself, will help change America's image around the world"

Sure, just like thousands of black rappers and sitcom stars and pop stars and NBA stars have been doing for a long time now. If there is one Western country I easily associate with black people, it is the States.

Maybe it is different in the former Communist Bloc, I do not know. I remember Dick Advocaat saying in an interview that he would love to field some black football players at Sint-Petersburg but that it was impossible because the fans would not accept it. But I think it is highly unlikely that a black American president will change this.
