The problem I see is that we are asked to subsidize a decision that comes out of national pride and a desire to belong to a club, motivated by a traumatic history, not economic considerations. We can no longer indulge such irrational desires.

That does not mean they should be let drop dead. If they need credit and are willing to abide by the terms, the EU's other members should not leave them to the IMF.

Hi Antomi Jaume,

"As I read Edward Hugh, the failure of CEE economies will drag down eurozone economy."

This I think is the point. If the East sinks Germany sinks like a stone (since the export lock in is just so great), and the rest of the eurozone sinks via the implosion of our banking system - which as AJ says is hardly without problems already.

"I agree with “Doesn’t matter” : Thanks, but no thanks. And I don’t think that they’re economical weight could drag down Ewt of Europe."

Well this is the thing, France could walk, go protectionist, and simply leave the rest to it. Living standards in France would probably drop by 20 - 30% but they would certainly be the best off, so I could see their interest in leaving. If Germany, the UK, Spain and Italy all sink, then Tokyo and New York won't be far behind (this would be like Lehman bros in reverse) and we would definitevel have moved from the "growth" to the "shrinkage" era.

Still, if this is what people want, who am I to say no. It will certainly all be very interesting from an economic point of view.

Oliver, lack of gestures has a price too. As I read Edward Hugh, the failure of CEE economies will drag down eurozone economy. And I believe that eurozone states are already quite down by themselves.
