Hi Alex,

I did not comment much on the French situation, beyond the fact that Ségolène Royal is not hostile to an updated Constitution, subject to a referendum - which, to me, implies some (possibly cosmetic) changes in the direction desired by the left. Whether such changes have any chance of beign agreed, and whether the new vote would bring a "oui" were not my topic.

My post was about the huge barrage of hostile articles in all British newspapers, which, in my mind, reflects the fear by some, grounded or not, that such an outcome (a "socialised" Constitution approved in a French referendum) might come to pass.

I've never hidden that I am a fervent partisan of the "oui", and that I found the lefty "non" particularly shortsighted - and that I find the current squirming in UK papers enjoyable.

As to the ECB - you're absolutely right. What might change is not the ECB charter (things will calm down after the election, but more political cooperation between eurozone governments (although this is still wishful thinking at this stage, I'll freely admit)

You don't think the Royale woman might be offering a referendum precisely because she hopes the French will vote "non" again?

I don't think having a leftist government will solve ANY of the problems France is going to face if they don't carry out major social and industrial reforms.
