A Fistful Of Euros

Thank God for anthems

by P O Neill

There I was thinking that the Euro 2008 opening ceremony was the usual bizarre interpretative dance performance to which UEFA seems addicted — not even good on TV, for which the visuals seem designed — when a singer (must figure out her name) and the Basel crowd did a great job on the Swiss national anthem, the Schweizerpsalm.   Let’s play football!

The Swiss were very unlucky to have lost both their first match and Frei. They played with fervour and created most chances whereas the Czechs looked a bit uninspired. Too bad.

BTW: Why not do a daily open football thread here on AFOE?

I agree w/ Guy about the open football thread.

To some extent, I think the referees gave the match to the Czechs. Two handballs by the Czechs in the box were not called, both in the last 10 minutes. I also think the second yellow card the Swiss received was really undeserved, especially if the player who took out Frei (forget his name) didn’t receive a yellow card. Better luck next time, I suppose.
