Well, Woolf, I don't know whether that is what is going on - but there is clearly some political infighting between the financial establishment and (I assume) the government behind the scenes. I noted with interest Népszava's story this morning that the MNB president, András Simor has off-shore business interests that might be (at least according to Népszava) incompatible with his role at the head of the MNB. These stories never pop by accident in the Hungarian press, and clearly someone somewhere is after him ....

Personally I hate conspiacy theory, but as yesterday two of my friends told me that at Wednesday, when the Hungarian press (with Portfolio in the fronline) after the joint declaration created a story about forint being dissociated from the regions other currencies (what was obviously not the case) they were called with rumors, one by a friend from Geneva (!) that OTP would freeze clients savings accounts, the other with the "news" that Gyurcsány would announce sovereign default in moments, I became suspicious that this week we saw a deliberate attempt to overthrow the government.
