All over

Well, Greece are the European Champions for the first time. The side that had never won a match in a major tournament before this year beat Portugal 1-0 in Lisbon to take the title. Expect wild party in Athens for the next few days.

Commiserations to Portugal – if it’s any consolation to Portuguese fans, you hosted a fantastic tournament that will be remembered for a long time.

Update: Reuters have a report on the start of the celebrations in Athens and elsewhere around the world.

  1. Truly a party… Last night the crowds in Omonia square saw daybreak dancing in the streets. We’re talking literally millions of people all over Greece in streets and city, neighbourhood and town squares – and similar celebrations erupted from Halifax to Wellington and from London to Cape Town…
It was so sweet because it was so utterly unexpected. The largest party in the world is what we had on and off for the past three weeks here in Athens. And it was a helluva lot of fun!

Thank you Portugal for a great tournament and some truly magic football moments… And kudos to the Portugese fans, magnificent even in painful defeat.

  2. Let’s see if the Greeks can get their shit together and complete the damn stadiums in time for the Olympics.
