About Edward Hugh

Edward 'the bonobo' is a Catalan economist of British extraction. After being born, brought-up and educated in the United Kingdom, Edward subsequently settled in Barcelona where he has now lived for over 15 years. As a consequence Edward considers himself to be "Catalan by adoption". By inclination he is a macro economist, but his obsession with trying to understand the economic impact of demographic changes has often taken him far from home, off and away from the more tranquil and placid pastures of the dismal science, into the bracken and thicket of demography, anthropology, biology, sociology and systems theory. All of which has lead him to ask himself whether Thomas Wolfe was not in fact right when he asserted that the fact of the matter is "you can never go home again".

  2. The extent to which a dynasty exists is the extent to which access to political power is restricted.

  3. Apparently there are three routes to the highest office in Greece: you can be a Papandreou, you can be a Karamanlis, or you can be named Konstantinos ;)

I don’t know how George Rallis made it to the top :D (actually, he’s part of an older political dynasty in Greece http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Rallis)

  4. Or Ireland. The current Prime Minister (Taoiseach), Deputy Prime Minister (Tánaiste) and Minister for Finance are all children of former members of the Dáil. Furthermore, the Minister for Finance is the son of a former Táiniste, the nephew of a current deputy and former cabinet minister, the grandson of a former deputy, and the brother of a current junior minister.
